KL-01-02: ADVANCED CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAMME FOR TRIBAL YOUTH

Context:
ISI in collaboration with TUDI (Tribal Unity for Development and Initiatives) and AADI (Attappady Adivasi Development Initiatives) have played a significant role in terms of creating awareness, mobilization and leadership formation among Tribals in Kerala. They have gained new orientation and life in social movements through our constant capacity building training programmes. Many of these young trained Adivasis are active in their own villages and take up issues of the tribals collectively. Therefore they need to be updated with the socio-cultural realities and leadership skills. There is also a need to strengthen the existing network initiatives among Tribals and Tribal Organizations in Kerala. Therefore keeping these objectives in mind, two 5-day advanced training programmes are being conducted in collaboration with AADI and TUDI respectively at Attappady and in Wayanad.
Objectives:
  • To make them aware of the socio-cultural trends that affects the Adivasi existence.
  • To train the Adivasi youth for social development programmes.
  • To provide training in community leadership skills.

Adivasis all over the world are becoming conscious of their identity and rights. KL-05: RELEASE OF THE RESEARCH REPORT AND SEMINAR ON “LANDOWNERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT OF DALITS IN KERALA”

Context :

Land alienation and land struggles occupy the centre state discussion for the Dalits in Kerala today. Dalits have experienced highhanded land alienation process by the State as well as landlords. The State takes pride for enacting land reform laws which gives full ownership rights to tenant cultivators. But the Dalits and the Adivasis could never access tenancy rights since they were barred from becoming a tenant within traditional caste system of Kerala. Struggles continued down the years, yet governments, both the left as well as the right, took little efforts for the redistribution of the land. In recent years Dalits and Adivasis have opted for “Forced Land Occupation” as a strategy. While the State considers this move of the marginalised as unconstitutional for the dalits and adivasis it is a matter of equity and justice.
The land reforms and distribution of the land still remains out of the policy of the State governments. It primarily remains as the demand of the deprived sections. The share of the Dalit landholding in Kerala was only 2.94 per cent in 1991 though their population was 11 per cent. Their average landholding per family is only 0.07 per cent. Taking account of these primary information and issues related to Land, Kerala Outreach Unit conducted a Research in the year 2007-08 on the “Landownership and development of Dalits With special reference to the Land holding of Dalits in two taluks Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts”.
This seminar is proposed for sharing the findings of the study with the Dalit community. This information and report would assist the Dalit organizations to intensify their demand on right to ownership of land.
Objectives:
  • To share the information from the study to the Dalit Community.
  • To disseminate the findings to various Dalit organisations, in order to take the issues related to land at the state level .
  • To present Data on the Land holding of Dalit families and the trends of land distribution measures by Government.

KL-06: SOCIO-CULTURAL ANALYSIS AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR DALITS IN NORTH KERALA

Context:
Dalit movements and Dalit community based activities are not active in North Kerala (Malabar), which is backward compared to south Kerala. For the last two years ISI has initiated trainings on socio-cultural analysis and leadership skills in this region. These trainings have motivated and rejuvenated a number of Dalit activist and Leaders. However, In order to continue their good work for the community, it is important to give them ideological clarity about socio-cultural situation of Dalits and to develop their leadership qualities. This would strengthen their movement in the region and would help to bring all the Dalit Organizations in the region under one umbrella to intensify the effect of their work and to deepen the unity and solidarity at the state level. This 3-day training on Leadership programme is organized in collaboration with Samskriti, Pariyaram.
Objectives:
  • To create an understanding among the participants about the socio-cultural situation of the country.
  • To help them to re-look into Dalit identity and culture .
  • To help them to understand the life and mission of Dalit emancipators.
  • To develop leadership skills.
  • To motivate them to organise themselves as the future Dalits leaders.

KL-07: A SEMINAR ON THE IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION ON THE EDUCATION OF COASTAL STUDENTS

Context:
In spite of several developmental programmes for fisher folk, the people in the coastal area continue to remain marginalized due to their educational backwardness. Government grants provided to fishermen students are insufficient when it comes to their higher education. Thus they do not help the community for a sustainable and comprehensive development. Unlike the earlier days, now the education of the coastal children at the primary and secondary level is ensured. But in the new globalised scenario, the higher education of the coastal students is facing more serious challenges due to the non-affordability of the expenses involved. A two-day seminar for coastal youth in higher education is expected to deal with the problems and prospects of coastal youth in higher education. Apart from the scholarly paper presentations, two panel discussions are planned with the Minister for Fisheries and other important government officials and leaders from the Central as well as State Governments, so that the major concerns and issues in the seminar which are related to the policies of the Government’s, are immediately brought to their attention. This seminar is organized in collaboration with Xavier Outreach Services of St. Xavier’s College, Trivandrum.
Objectives:
  • To create awareness among the coastal youth on the marginalization of the fishing community in socio-cultural, political and economic areas of life due to their educational backwardness.
  • To analyze the socio-cultural, political and economic impact of globalization on the education of the coastal people.
  • To motivate and enable the coastal youth to understand their role and responsibility in a wider agenda of fishing community
  • To expose the students to a certain level of leadership skills and qualities.

Date : August 17-18, 2009
Participants : 100
Medium : Malayalam
Venue : St. Xavier’s College auditorium, Trivandrum.

KL-08: SOCIO-CULTURAL ANALYSIS AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR COASTAL STUDENTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Context:
Students are the hope and promises of any enlightened community. But the students from a marginalized community like the fisherfolk, by and large lack confidence, leadership and motivation in taking up responsibilities. On the other hand experiences show that if their skills and capacities are properly trained and guided, they could turn out to be a perfect force in the development of the fishing community. Hence there is a need to build up strong and powerful student leaders. A three-day residential training programme for a selected group of 35 students is expected to contribute greatly in shaping them into good and committed leaders. This training is organized in collaboration with Xavier Outreach Services of St. Xavier’s College, Trivandrum.
Objectives:
  • To deepen the students’ understanding of the culture and identity of the fishing community in Kerala.
  • To broaden their knowledge of society and educational realities of marginalized communities in Kerala.
  • To deepen the understanding of factors such as Globalisation and cultural alienation which hamper a sustainable and comprehensive development of the fishing community.
  • To expose the students to a certain level of leadership skills and qualities.
  • To motivate them to foster unity and to work as good leaders committed to the fishing community.
