WU-01: WORKSHOP ON HEALTH RIGHTS FOR WOMEN

Context:
The right of health includes the availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality of health care and health determinants. Health is a fundamental right, which influences all aspects of life. The freedom to control one’s body is an important element of women’s right to health. Women's health and nutritional status is inextricably bound up with social, cultural, and economic factors that influence all aspects of their lives, and it has consequences not only for the women themselves but also for the well-being of their children, the functioning of households, and the distribution of resources.
Although young child mortality has declined significantly over the past two decades, over 30 percent of all deaths in India occur among children under 5, and, despite their innate biological advantages, more girls than boys die. Maternal mortality in India, estimated at 437 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, results primarily from infection, haemorrhage, eclampsia, obstructed labour, abortion, and anaemia. Women health, reproductive health and women rights have to be imparted, and so this training programme is planned.
Objectives:
  • To highlight the different health programme for women .
  • To know the present status of health functionaries.
  • To understand the inter connection of gender roles & women’s health .
  • To create awareness on the health rights.

WU–02: WOMEN AND LEGAL RIGHTS

Context:
Women constitute about one half of the global population, but they are at various disadvantageous positions due to gender difference and bias. They have been victims of violence, exploitation and discrimination. Many disabilities have been imposed on them by the male dominated society. Rampant abuses against women have been excused, ignored or taken for granted. Throughout the world, women are still relegated to second-class status that makes them more vulnerable to abuse and less able to protect themselves.
Laws are instruments of Social Justice. Ignorance of law makes one subservient and subordinate. Women need great educational values and a great strength of purpose to work against injustice done to them and assert their rights over resources. Hence there is a great need for training programmes highlighting the legal aspects protecting women folk so that they protect themselves from various discriminations and at the same time get their fare share in all walks of life. This is open programme in Kannada.
Objectives:
  • To make the women aware of their rights.
  • To make the women apply the laws wherever necessary in their work place.
  • To inject the spirit of assertiveness in women.

WU-05: TRAINING FOR FISHERWOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT OF COASTAL ANDHRA

Context:

Across Andhra Pradesh, women fish workers have struggled to bring to the fore their issues and concerns. Their struggles have been on many fronts. Their roles in nurturing and sustaining the family and community, and their economic contribution to household, local and national economies, are rarely recognized. They face gender discrimination at home, as individuals and at work, as laborers. Their health is adversely affected; and they face sexual harassment and physical violence. Those engaged in small-scale fisheries find it difficult to compete with powerful traders, exporters and others, in globalized markets. Women in the fish-processing sector are often migrant and unorganized Labour, who are discriminated against and work in poor conditions.

In the last one decade fisher women in Andhra are coming together, more so after the Tsunami. They are slowly getting organised. All the coastal women are in the process of organizing as village level associations and also a federation at mandal level, and yet to become strong forceful force to put forth their demands. This training program is organized at the state level for the selected members.

Objectives:
  • To make them ware of their rights.
  • To strengthen the organization and its activates.
  • To Strengthen the women participation in civil society organisations.

WU-07: CAPACITY BUILDING TRAINING FOR WOMEN IN ORGANIZATIONS AND CBOs

Context:
An essential aspect of capacity building among women is the provision of adequate and relevant education and training programmes. We need to develop women’s capacity in the following aspects: Creativity, curiosity, personal judgment, self-reliance, self-confidence and sense of humour/optimism. Taking into account of the above, this training programme is organised for the People’s Organization, CBOs, and NGOs leaders from Karnataka. WU-08: WORKSHOP 0N GENDER SENSITISATION

Context:
The patriarchcal society plays a dominant role in perceiving one’s own behaviour. The elders of the house teach children certain behaviour pattern and they in turn imbibe certain behaviours by observation and practice. Even the toys given to the boys and girls are different. Girls are given dolls and small kitchen items, denoting that they have to learn cooking and the art of bringing up children. India being a male dominated society, its customs and traditions are also favouring men and thus there is a lack of gender equity. Women are pushed back, even though they are capable of being partners with men in all spheres of life. Two years ago, when this training was conducted, men and women did realise how their own knowledge, and behaviour internalised from childhood days controlled their life and how they were not aware of them. Later they were convinced and wanted to change their attitude towards a positive approach. This training programme is planned for women and men, so that they would in turn train others in their work areas.
Objectives:
  • To inculcate gender sensitivity in the participants.
  • To eliminate gender biased discriminations in work places.
  • To make the people bring in change in the society.
  • To enable them to work for a gender balanced society.

WU-09: TRAINING ON GLOBALIZATION AND ITS EFFECTS ON WOMEN

Context:
Women and children are the primary victims of globalization through economic and social exploitation. "Globalization and the Recolonization and Marginalization of Poor Women who constitute more than half of the world's population provide them to reap only one percent of the world's wealth, said Kunnie, director of African studies. However, even as globalization offers opportunities for the economic emancipation of women via lucrative jobs in emerging services and information technology (IT) industry, pressures of everyday existence, changes in social milieu and expectations means that live-in relationships are on the rise. At the same time, many women's advocates recognize that globalization affects different groups of women in different ways, creates new standards for the treatment of women, and helps women's groups to mobilize.
The contradictory effects of globalization have thus entailed serious problems as well as challenges and opportunities for women worldwide. Of great significance are the actions and initiatives of women at the local community level where they are not only providing much needed services but also exploring possibilities grounded in alternative women-affirming value of human and non-human life and contributing to the development of participatory democratic structures. Although such efforts are often fragile, they are gaining strength and recognition through the transnational women’s movement and numerous forums. The programme is intended for the Women NGO heads and organised at South India level.
Objectives:
  • To make the participants to heighten their awareness of the effect of globalization.
  • To make them understand the processes of Globalizations and its effects.
  • To enable them resist globalisation and promote indigenous market and knowledge.
